The protection and conservation projects have been and still are a fundamental tool to spread Riwaq message inside local communities. From 1994, Riwaq has developed experiences and skills in conservation and protection designing and realising more than 100 projects.

These projects demonstrate how old buildings can be readapted to satisfy modern needs, that traditional techniques can be applied to contemporary restoration and conservation allows a valuable saving, compared to the constructions of new buildings.

In 2002 Riwaq starts a project called “Job Creation through Conservation”. This project allows Riwaq to work at the same time on conservation, communities participation and development. The majority of the restores buildings host services and public activities. Even though the property is private, these buildings have been rented to public organisation, inhabitants associations, no profit organisation, that need new spaces to offer their services. In this way it has been possible to attract activities in places that before were outside the traditional paths and that now are space for new form of social interaction.
